Selena is important to me because she represents the Latina woman. Her Spanish wasn't that great, which is like a lot of us. I saw what everybody else saw, which was the announcement on social media. I picked up the phone and I called Selena's sister Suzette at her office - she works at the Selena museum in Corpus Christi - and I was like, "Look, MAC wants to reach out to you!" She said, "If they call me, we'll see what happens." I connected MAC with the Quintanilla family, and that's when I was like, "OK, I'm going to step off, I can't be involved anymore because this is no longer pertains to me." I have not spoken to them since, but I know they were OK with the decision. I didn't find out that MAC was actually doing the line until a few months later. Here's 10,000 voices all asking the same thing."įinally, I got a call from them that was like, "OK, Patty, we get it now, thank you! How do we do this? Who do we reach out to?" So I put them in contact with the Quintanilla family. I started it, and in four days, it got, like, 10,000 signatures! I sent it to MAC and said, "I hope you don't hate me yet, but this is not the last you're going to hear of me. That image of the lipstick was going viral and this March was the 20th anniversary of  death. So I figured now was the perfect time to try a petition. So I immediately forwarded this to my MAC contact. They were still being nice to me, but they still didn't understand. I came across this image online of a MAC lipstick with a Selena signature, and I was like, "Oh my god, is this happening already?" I did a little research and it turns out it wasn't a real image it was a superimposed image by a makeup artist, Jose Figueroa, who pretty much was thinking the same thing I was. I don't know what they were doing internally I just hoped they'd respond to one of my crazy emails.įast-forward to early 2015. They said, "Thank you so much for the suggestion, we'll consider it."Īnd I was like, "Well, I don't think they understand what I'm saying." So I sent them a few more emails in 20, trying to really show them who Selena is. So when MAC responded to my first email - which I did not think they would - it was a really big deal. Growing up, I felt like you had made it when you were able to purchase your first MAC lipstick. Here, the radio producer and creator of Lil' Libros and MALA By Patty Rodriguez Jewelry describes how it feels to find out that the line is going to be a reality. All the petitioning paid off in July, when the company announced that a Selena-inspired line would hit shelves in 2016. Rodriguez launched a  petition asking the brand to create Selena for MAC, and she quickly racked up almost 40,000 signatures. That casual email sparked a viral movement.

"'We're your biggest group and it would only make sense for a popular brand like MAC to create a line for Selena Quintanilla, a singer who means so much to us.'" "It was just me saying, 'Hey, I'm a Latina consumer and as a demographic, we will purchase three times more beauty products than any other consumer in the country,'" she told . Patty Rodriguez first sent MAC Cosmetics an email in 2013 with a simple suggestion.
